The Indians Iban Malaysia, land of wonderful culture

What can we do in Malaysia? This country, which gained independence from the British in 1957, has in its capital Kuala Lumpur, the highest skyscraper in the world. The two highest in the world are twin towers built by the country’s largest oil company, Petronas. But if we see something different, you can visit the island of Borneo, inhabited by indigenous tribes like the Iban, Bidayuh and the Melanau. In the region of Sarawak Malay customs blend with modernity: traditional houses, crafts, hunting and fishing, crafts and setting up their homes in the middle of the jungle. The dances and spiritual rites (some quite morbid to Western morality). Currently, 80% of citizens living in rural Sarawak, Iban tribes and represent 30% of all tribes living in an almost primitive.

The Iban are a number of vertebrate tribes around the river, trying to have a type of ancient life. These blowgun fishing in rivers and lakes in the forest hunting monkeys, wild cats and reptiles. The staple diet is fruit and leaves. They are governed by their own laws, where they choose in perpetuity their great chief. Usually distributed by families, and are self-sufficient, also enjoying good health, which can only be exacerbated in the case of consuming a harmful plant. They are midwives to pregnant women, as well as a spiritual doctor to cure diseases with natural products that have at your fingertips.

We can see in these jungles, one of the most dense in the world, the importance of orangutans, which are currently endangered by instability in populations, and poor conservation of their natural habitat, which is being cut. Therefore, these tribes have built the center Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation in the town of Sandakan. Also, if you want to know more about these tribes, we can visit the Sarawak Cultural Village Museum, although it is recommended to live with them at least a day.

The best way to reach the villages is through the rivers, not very deep but very brave, on vessels elongated wooden handmade. Upon arrival, a woman with a gong to alert the rest of the arrival of a new person, and are welcoming children, youth and then finally the elderly. The houses are built high for two reasons: either to flooding from rivers not destroyed, as well as to prevent animals from entering them. Around the Longhouse or communal house, a wooden building very large and elongated, the backbone of the other buildings. This longhouse has two distinct parts: the Ruai, speaking, smokes, you can play, make crafts or make important decisions for the community, as well as where they are made parties, dances and rituals. Through this corridor open doors to private rooms where families live, and there are cooking, sleeping, and can only enter if you are invited. Up to 150 people live in the Longhouse, governed by a Tuai Rumah (head) and laws and traditions.

A characteristic feature of this tribe are the tattoos are an integral part of culture, with a specific ritual associated with spiritual beliefs. These tattoos, which are carried by more than one hundred years, have repeated elements, such as the Rose of Borneo, which carry the tattoo as a way of identifying them in a higher hierarchy level, while other accounts say it is the passage of the childhood to adulthood. Another is the Borneo Scorpion, also known as Kala, and appears to be a dog or dragon interpretation related to the protection of malevolent spirits. The technique is tattooed with two rods, one with the T-shaped tip and the other to hit and go by and the tattoo.

Traditional Mexican town of San Cristobal

Traditional Mexican town of San CristobalThis is a page of three in San Cristobal. For those who visit a traditional Mexican town, this is definitely the one to choose.

San Cristobal was our favorite city (the full name of the city is San Cristobal de lass Cases). This is not surprising, since it is in the center of our favorite state (Chiapas, for example).

The city, its culture, its people and the surrounding villages to attend a place of inspiration.

People
The Indians of San Cristobal are very traditional clothing and colorful in their costumes. The ladies wear several layers of clothing, including strategic beautiful embroidered blouses and what appear to be folded blankets on the head. If you get a travel agency offering a good service you can have a pleasant journey as you will see in the movies.

These Indians everyday appearance is exceptional. From a photographic point of view, this was probably the most disappointing aspect of our trip.

Markets
San Cristobal de lass Cases has developed a variety of markets with local traditional clothes and dolls Marcos (see the political climate of San Cristobal page for more information on Mark).

On our last morning in San Cristobal, went to local food markets at 6:30 of the clock. These were fascinating and were completely free of tourists. Although Andrew did not stand the smell was the sight of slaughtered animals were taken to the place where the variety of beans and chilies endless. I never knew so many kinds of beans and gave it as different color like pink, purple and white pinto provide. There seemed to be painted. The part of the flower market was also beautiful.

Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve we went to the Margarita Bar, a tourist spot. The food, atmosphere and music were all great (although the smoke was abundant). The most memorable of the night was when we bought all the fiery “La Cucaracha” shots, of which Etsuko called the table cloth fire. It was really trying to see funny people, turn off the blue alcohol flame.

We also have a load of fireworks from the top of our hotel.

Christmas
most people in a big celebration for its decadent enjoy Christmas dinner. We ate on the other side, probably the best and cheapest or dinner of our trip. We went to La Salsa Verde Taco restaurant and ate chicken and cheese, tacos were awesome. The chicken was before us in what looked like a 44 gallon with a giant wok on top of the kitchen of the drum. We bored a lot in our selection of chicken and cheese as their selection was endless. However, the chicken, cheese, tortillas, salsa, onions, etc, was delicious and only costs 3 pesos, which was about 55 cents.

‘Creole’ West Indian pace we live on the island of Providencia

Indian folklore is born when, facing the sea, it vibrates to the sound of calypso, polka or mazurka.

If happiness can be heard, must sound like a Creole band one night in Providence, a few meters from the sea and the roar of the fire burning very light background.

The plan is abandoned in the middle of the relaxation produced by the comings and goings of the waves that arrive dressed in seven colors. A party atmosphere goes through the veins when they come together maracas, mandolin, and the inevitable ‘ratchet’.

The first is perhaps the only instrument well known in the continent. The other insignia of the archipelago, have traveled dozens of countries in the hands of a handful of native islanders to promote Colombian insular culture, but, the truth should not sound like anywhere else in the world.
