Everyone knows Kylie, but did you know she was born in Melbourne in 1968? Kylie and her sister Dannii (another famous Melburnian) were raised in the Surrey Hills area of town and educated at Camberwell high school.
Eric Bana – Actor
This Hollywood actor became a household name for his portrayal of ‘Chopper’ Reid, a famous Australian criminal. Bana was born Eric Banadinovi?, in Melbourne’s Tullamarine district, after his Croatian grandfather emigrated to Australia in the 1950s. He started doing stand-up routines at Melbourne’s Castle Hotel.
Olivia Newton-John – Actress
Famed for her role in Grease alongside John Travolta, Newton-John started life in Melbourne, where her family emigrated when she was very young.
Mark Philipoussis – Tennis player
This Aussie hunk was a professional tennis player until 2006 and made it to two grand slam finals. He is now also known as a reality television star. He was born in Melbourne and educated at Maribyrong College. He was coached for a while by another Australian sporting legend – Pat Cash. Australians and Melburnians are rightly proud of their sporting heritage and prowess. Philipoussis is also a keen surfer, like many other Melbourne folk.
Nick Cave – Singer and Novelist
Nick Cave is a famous musician and writer, and was born in the small town of Warracknabeal in Victoria State, near Melbourne. He was rebellious as a youngster and was sent to Melbourne’s Caulfield Grammar School to gain some discipline. He later studied painting at a Melbourne university before embarking on his musical career.
Sir Macfarlane Burnet – Scientist
Macfarlane was a virologist and his one of Melbourne’s famous scientific sons. He received his degree from Melbourne University and went on to make some amazing medicinal breakthroughs before becoming a knight of the realm. He was the first ‘Australian of the year’ in 1960, an event which has since been won by famous tennis star Evonne Goolagong, and Manning Clark, historian.
