Leave behind the routine – go to Cyprus

Cyprus is a small island country in the eastern Mediterranean and a popular holiday destination for many travellers around the world.  It offers some of the best weather conditions for a holiday with temperate winters and warm summers.  Miles of sparkling beaches on the rugged coastline are made even more striking with mountains in the background.

Villas and apartments are readily available on the island and just outside them is an endless variety of things to do and places to explore.  Besides the beaches, there is a deep cultural history on the island, including Greek temples, remains of Roman occupation, castles left over from the Crusades and Byzantine churches.  English is spoken widely throughout Cyprus, though the culture remains Greek-Cypriot.  Cyprus is also known for its low crime rate and friendly locals.

The best thing about holidays in Cyprus is that it can be virtually anything a person wants.  From warm days spent lying about on the beach or exploring historical sites or going on a gourmand’s adventure with the local cuisine, there is an endless array of things to do on the island.  Club-goers will find much to like as well, with unique clubs providing much of the action right on the beach.

Wine lovers can explore the over 50 boutique wineries located throughout the Troodos Mountains.  The Agia Mavri Winery serves an award-winning white muscat and can be found in the Wine Villages area.  Food fans would do well to avoid the tourist traps and look for smaller tavernas enjoyed by the locals.  Seafood dishes on Cyprus are especially fresh and sumptuous.

As previously mentioned, Cyprus is a wonderland of historical ruins.  The big three for sightseeing include the Ancient Kourin, the Pafos Mosaics and the Ancient Salamis.  Ancient Kourin is a Greco-Roman amphitheatre sitting atop a cliff and it has been extensively renovated in recent years.  The reason for this can be found in the Pafos Mosaics, which are found on the floors of the amphitheatre.  The Ancient Salamis is a remarkable Roman construction housing baths, a temple, forum, villa, theatre and much more.
